Effect of Training System and Planting Density on Growth of Wine Grapes

Abstract
Two training systems (Open Lyre and Kniffin) with two planting densities (3.3m¡¿1.5-1.1m and 1.8m¡¿1.5-1.1m, R¡¿V, respectively) were evaluated for their effects on growth of 14 wine grapes (Riesling, Ugni Blanc, Se¢¥millon, Chardonnay, Clairette, Muscat de Frontignan, Chenin Blanc, S.VS-276, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Carignane, Merlot, Perdea) grafted on SO4. Cane pruning weights of vines per 10a averaged 268.1 §¸ in 1988, 293.7§¸ in 1989, 303.8§¸ in 1990, and 3-year total averaged 288.5§¸. Pruning weights of vines trained to the Open Lyre system were heavier than Kniffm system. Chenin Blanc, Se¢¥millon, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes had greater pruning weights while Muscat de Frontignan, Perdea, Carignane were less. Number of berries per cluster of Open Lyre system was higher than that of Kniffin system. Carignane, Ugni Blanc, and SV 5-276 grapes had more number of berries per cluster while Riesling, Perdea, Semillon grapes had less.
